Learning and Growing as the People of God – Our RE Curriculum

We are pleased to follow Learning and Growing as the People of God, the Religious Education curriculum used in Catholic primary schools across the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

This document supports children in learning about and growing in their Catholic faith, and sets out what is taught in RE from Nursery through to Year 6. It helps build a strong partnership between school, home, and parish—something that is central to Catholic education.

Teachers are guided by clear expectations and a wide range of engaging materials, which they can adapt to meet the needs of their pupils. While some content is challenging, it encourages deep thinking and meaningful discussions about faith and values.

We are grateful to those who developed this curriculum and fully support its role in shaping the future of Religious Education in our schools.

Autumn Term

The Story of Creation and Our God-Given Gifts

In our Religious Education lessons, we help the children understand that all of creation, including their own gifts and talents, is a special gift from God. We teach that the Bible is God’s book, where we learn about His love for the world and all of us.

Children will have the opportunity to recall parts of the Creation story through pictures and captions, helping them connect the story to their own lives. They will also explore the idea that their unique gifts are God-given, and they will be encouraged to recognise and celebrate these talents.

Additionally, children will be able to participate actively in the liturgy, understanding that the Creation story comes from the Bible, and is a key part of our faith.

People Who Care For Us

In this unit, we help children understand the importance of family relationships, focusing on how families care for one another. We also explore the value of celebration, drawing on examples from the life of Jesus and the times he celebrated with his family and friends.

Children will learn that families show love and care for each other and that Jesus’ family included Mary and Joseph. They will be able to recall a celebration that Jesus attended with his mother, Mary, and explore other significant moments, such as Jesus’ birth and the Finding in the Temple.

Throughout the unit, children will also have the opportunity to draw pictures of the people who show care to them, understand the concept of marriage, and identify different family celebrations.

Advent - Four Weeks of Advent

During this unit, children will focus on the season of Advent, taking time each week to prepare in a special way for the celebration of Christmas.

They will learn that Advent lasts for four weeks and will recall the activities they participated in to get ready for this important time. Children will also have the opportunity to speak to God through their own personal prayers, helping them connect with the spiritual meaning of Advent.
